BOSTON (AP) — Basketball Hall of Famer Jo Jo White, a two-time NBA champion with the Boston Celtics and an Olympic gold medalist, has died. He was 71.The Celtics announced his death Tuesday night. No cause was provided. The team said it was “terribly saddened” by White’s passing, calling him a “champion and a gentleman; supremely talented and brilliant on the court, and endlessly gracious off of it.”White played 10 seasons for Boston, which drafted him ninth overall from Kansas in 1969. He averaged 17.2 points per game over 13 years, also playing for Golden State and the Kansas City Kings before retiring in 1981.The Celtics retired White’s No. 10 the following year, and he still was working with the club as a director of special projects at the time of his death.FIn this Monday, April 6, 2015 file photo, Former NBA player Jo Jo White stands on stage during the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2015 announcement in Indianapolis. He played one final season in Kansas City, but was always beloved in Boston as a Celtic.“His contributions to the team’s championship legacy may have only been surpassed by the deep and lasting impact that he had in the community,” the Celtics said in the statement. “The thoughts and sympathies of the entire Celtics organization are with the White family.”At Kansas, White was an All-America selection in 1968 and 1969, was a three-time All-Big Eight Conference honoree and the Jayhawks’ Most Valuable Player for three straight seasons under coach Ted Owens. Owens later hired White as an assistant at Kansas for two seasons.“He made an incredible contribution to Kansas basketball,” Owens said. “He was the absolute complete player, so unselfish. His teammates loved playing with him because he would play great on defense and distribute the ball, and would think about his teammates first then his own shot later.”White, who won an Olympic gold medal with the U.S. team in 1968, was a seven-time NBA All-Star. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015, when he recalled his performance in the triple-overtime victory over the Suns that put Boston one game away from winning another title.White played 60 of a possible 63 minutes of the game. Former Boston coach and player Tommy Heinsohn said the induction into the Hall of Fame was long overdue for White, who was thrilled it happened after battling health problems, including a brain tumor, late in life.“I absolutely adored playing this game,” White said. Powered by Firework It is only preseason, and neither team took the games seriously, but the Los Angeles Lakers did beat the two-time defending champions Golden State Warriors twice in succession.Advertisement The final score in Portland was 119-105, and the fringe players played a starring role for the Lakers.Advertisement The Lakers were without numerous key players, as the likes of LeBron James and Rajon Rondo were rested. Brandon Ingram was nursing a quad injury, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has knee tendinitis and Josh Hart had a hamstring problem to deal with. Neither one of them will be out for long, and they will play in the season opener against Portland.Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, and JaVale McGee played, and all of them notched up useful numbers. Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson played minutes, but both of them were ejected in the second half.Advertisement Svi Mykhailuk was the top scorer for the Lakers with 22 points. Aside from him, Johnathan Williams, Isaac Bonga, and Travis Wear all reached double figures and got some useful playing time, something which will be hard to come by in the regular season.Kevin Durant did not play for the Warriors, but their other stars did, albeit for limited minutes. Klay Thompson was their scoring leader with 21 points.Although it is preseason, the signs are promising for the Lakers. The Warriors are still huge favourites to clinch their third consecutive title, but something might be cooking up in Los Angeles. Advertisement
